The UK government has proposed important changes to the UK family visa income rules for 2025. These changes, if approved, aim to make the visa system more flexible and accessible for families wishing to reunite in the UK.
🔍 What’s Changing?
Currently, applicants under the family route (Appendix FM) must meet a minimum income threshold of £29,000 per year (as of April 2024). This amount is set to rise to £38,700 later in 2025. However, the government is now considering more flexible ways to meet this requirement, recognising that not all sponsors earn a standard salary, especially with evolving UK family visa income regulations in 2025.
💡 Key Proposals
Under the new flexible system, sponsors may be able to combine multiple income sources to meet the financial requirement, such as:
Employment income (including part-time or multiple jobs)
Self-employment income
Rental income or dividends
Pension income
Cash savings (above £16,000)
This means sponsors could mix income and savings or demonstrate income across several sources, rather than relying on a single job. This approach may satisfy the UK family visa income rules being proposed for 2025.
👪 What About Children?
The financial requirement for those sponsoring a partner with children is expected to remain higher. However, the proposal recognises that many families with UK-born children may be unfairly excluded under the rigid current rules, especially with upcoming changes to following UK family visa income standards in 2025.
The new system may include more compassionate provisions for families with strong UK ties, allowing discretion where strict financial thresholds are not met.
📅 When Will This Take Effect?
These changes are part of a wider immigration policy review and have not yet been finalised. Any updates will be subject to parliamentary approval. If approved, they could take effect in late 2025 under new UK family visa rules regarding income.
