🇬🇧 Apply for a UK Fiancée or Proposed Civil Partner Visa from Outside the UK (2025 Guide)
If you’re planning to get married or enter into a civil partnership in the UK with a British or settled partner, the UK Fiancée Visa or Proposed Civil Partner Visa may be the right route for you. When applying for a UK fiancée or proposed civil partner visa, it’s important to understand the associated requirements.
This guide explains the requirements, process, and timelines for applying from overseas — especially for Thai nationals and other non-EEA applicants.
✅ What Is a UK Fiancée or Proposed Civil Partner Visa?
These visas allow individuals to enter the UK for the purpose of marrying or registering a civil partnership with their UK-based partner. You must intend to formalise the relationship within 6 months of arriving. Remember to apply for a UK fiancée or proposed civil partner visa well in advance.
Fiancée Visa: For opposite-sex or same-sex couples intending to marry.
Proposed Civil Partner Visa: For same-sex couples intending to register a civil partnership.
📝 Key Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for either visa, you must:
Be 18 or over at the time of application
Be free to marry or register a civil partnership
Plan to marry or register the partnership within 6 months of entering the UK
Have met in person and be in a genuine relationship
🗣️ English Language Requirement (A1 Level)
You must demonstrate knowledge of English by passing an approved A1 level English test in speaking and listening. This is a basic requirement for all first-time applicants unless exempt due to nationality or qualifications.
💷 Financial Requirement – 2025 Update
Your UK-based partner must meet the financial requirement:
Minimum gross annual income of £29,000, or
£88,500 in cash savings held for at least 6 months, or
A combination of income and savings to meet the requirement
This ensures the couple can live in the UK without recourse to public funds while holding a UK fiancée or proposed civil partner visa.
🩺 TB Test Requirement (If Applying from Thailand or Other Listed Countries)
Applicants from countries listed by the UK Home Office — including Thailand — must undergo a TB test at an approved clinic. A certificate confirming you are free from tuberculosis must be submitted with your visa application.
⏱️ Visa Processing Time – How Long Does It Take?
UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) advises applicants to allow up to 90 working days for a fiancée or proposed civil partner visa application made from overseas. Delays can occur, so it’s best to apply well in advance of your intended wedding or ceremony date.
🔁 What Happens After You Get Married or Register the Partnership?
After the marriage or civil partnership takes place in the UK, you can apply to switch to a Spouse or Civil Partner visa from within the UK.
This grants you permission to remain for 30 months (2.5 years)
You can later apply for a further extension and eventually for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR)
