In most cases, you cannot apply for a UK visa without a valid passport or travel document. The UK Home Office requires applicants to submit an original passport to prove their nationality and identity. However, there are a few exceptions and workarounds depending on your location and visa type.
π§Ύ What Counts as a Valid Travel Document?
To apply for a UK visa, your passport must:
Be current (not expired)
Contain at least one blank page
Be issued by a recognized authority, such as the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs
Other acceptable travel documents (in rare cases) include:
Emergency Travel Document (ETD)
Refugee Travel Document
Certificate of Identity
π What If My Thai Passport Is Lost or Expired?
If you are outside the UK:
Lost passport: You must obtain a police report and apply for a replacement at the Thai Consulate or Passport Office.
Expired passport: You must renew it before submitting your visa application.
π‘ Important: UKVI and VFS Global will not accept scanned copies or expired passports. An original, valid passport is required.
π Already in the UK? Here’s What to Do:
If you’re applying from inside the UK (e.g., for Further Leave to Remain – FLR(M), FLR(FP), or private life applications), and your passport is:
Lost or
Expired
You may still be able to apply, but you must include:
A cover letter explaining the issue
Proof that a new passport has been requested
A police report (if lost)
Any other proof of ID (Thai ID card, old passport, birth certificate)
β The Home Office may still accept your application while you wait for your replacement document.
π Applying from Outside the UK Without a Valid Passport?
This is not allowed. All applications submitted at visa centres such as VFS Bangkok must include:
A valid passport with a minimum of 6 months validity
At least one blank visa page
Your application will likely be rejected or not accepted without a valid passport.
π‘ What Are Your Options?
If you are in Thailand:
Apply for a replacement passport at the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Wait for the new passport to be issued.
Submit your visa application once you receive it.
If you are in the UK:
Contact the Thai Embassy in London to arrange a new passport.
Submit your UK visa application with:
A letter of explanation
A copy of your Thai ID
Proof that a new passport is being processed
