When does your UK visa application waiting time start and end?

The waiting period begins following your online application submission when:

  • show up for your appointment and give a visa application centre your fingerprints and a photo (biometric information)
  • Using the UK Immigration: ID Check app, confirm your identity. You will be informed if you can utilise this, depending on the type of visa you apply for.

When you receive an email with the outcome of your application, the waiting period will be over. If you applied from within the UK, the email will inform you if your application has been successful. However, if you applied overseas, then you must attend the UK visa application centre and collect your passport in person. If you have been refused, you will receive an email informing you why your application has been unsuccessful. It will also advise the applicant if it has a right of appeal.

The processing time for visit visas, including applications for normal visitor visas, is presently 3 weeks on average, though some applications may take longer.

If you are requesting to settle in the UK as the husband, partner, or family member of someone who has British citizenship or is already a resident of the country, you should receive a decision within 12 weeks after attending your appointment at the visa application centre.

If you have applied for a UK study visa then you should get a decision within 3-6 weeks. This is after you have submitted your biometrics.
